It's Simple....Simplify
Have you ever felt that you need to reduce the clutter in your life before you can move forward? I was feeling this way over the weekend and did something about it. I cleaned out all my junk drawers and de-cluttered my house. I got rid of those things that were taking up space and didn't make sense. Many call it simplifying. It's true, once I was done, things did seems more simple and my house can function better. When there's too much "stuff" around it's harder for me to focus on tasks at hand. This got me thinking about other areas of my life.
Isn't this, also, true for our minds? When we have too many distracting thoughts, it's more difficult to concentrate. It's important for us to clear our heads once and awhile too. Negative thoughts and worries can really bring us down and clutter our thinking.
Most of the time we make things harder than they need to be. Sometimes it's important to let things go and let them happen naturally. Getting back to the basics is simple. It can also remind us of how little we actually need to make us happy.
For instance, when it comes to being healthy, simplicity is the key. It's about making it easy, possible, and attainable. In our society, we have so many distractions, simplicity seems almost unattainable. Gadgets and electronics do everything we use to do manually. All of this is designed to make our lives easier and more productive. Although, some modern day conveniences have actually made our living a bit harder. By not moving as much as we use to, our bodies have not been working in the way they we're meant to. This has made life more difficult for many, as movement of the body is critical to health. No technology has been created to make this possible. I never will be, it's about behavior. Good health cannot happen without our active participation. Many people still don't believe they can get a quick fix without the work. They continue to purchase the magic exercise gadgets and attempt the latest diet craze without lasting results. It's simple, get motivated and move. Do you have ten minutes to spare each day? I know you do, think about it as mind and body therapy. Begin walking, it's simple and effective.
Being healthy, is an easy equation. Food in and energy expended. So why do we, as a society, have such a high rate of overweight and obese adults and children? It's clear, the equation is out of balance. Too much bad, not enough good. Too little movement, not enough commitment to personal improvement. I read this quote last week......"Improvement begins with I". It's true, it's all up to us ,individually, to take care of ourselves. So you see, it's really quite simple....we move it and we lose that extra clutter we're carrying around our waist line! This week's column, short and simple!
